Missing logos & fallbacks

Unknown identifiers normally return HTTP 404 with a JSON error. To request a lettered placeholder instead:

The placeholder is always SVG, even if you requested PNG. It carries X-Brandmarks-Fallback: monogram and a one-hour cache lifetime. It is only used when the company is unknown; a known company with missing artwork still returns 404.

For spreadsheets and email, use your own PNG placeholder or keep company text visible. Authentication failures, rate limits, and network errors also need application-level handling.

A mark.method of fallback is different: this is real company artwork fitted into a square. Choose variant=auto to let the API prefer the full logo for these companies.
